Selling a Boat in the Northern Territory

NT boat seller guide explaining the recreational-boat registration exception, proof of sale, PPSR, safety records and separate trailer transfer.

01

How the NT process works

The Northern Territory Government says recreational boats do not need registration and there is no recreational boat-licensing scheme. A sale therefore depends heavily on a clear contract, receipt, vessel identifiers and ownership history. Commercial and nationally registered vessels can have different requirements.

No NT recreational-boat registration schemeThere is no NT recreational-vessel registration transfer to complete. Confirm that the vessel is genuinely recreational and check commercial, AMSA and destination-jurisdiction requirements where relevant.
02

Seller steps

Complete these steps before or at settlement and keep copies. If the vessel is registered elsewhere, use that jurisdiction's process.

  1. 01Record the HIN or other permanent vessel identifier and photograph it.
  2. 02Provide a signed contract and receipt showing the parties, vessel, price, date, inventory and known exclusions.
  3. 03Provide available ownership, maintenance and PPSR/finance-discharge evidence.
  4. 04Complete the trailer registration disposal and transfer separately.
03

What the buyer needs to complete

A clear seller file helps the buyer meet the relevant deadline without returning for missing signatures or identifiers.

  1. 01Match the HIN and vessel description to the contract and physical boat.
  2. 02Investigate ownership history, conduct the appropriate PPSR search and verify any finance discharge.
  3. 03Check whether intended use triggers commercial, AMSA or another jurisdiction's requirements.
  4. 04Transfer the registered trailer separately.

Trailer, finance and settlement

The NT recreational-boat exception does not remove road-trailer registration. Identify and transfer the trailer separately.

There is no NT recreational-vessel registration transfer to complete. Confirm that the vessel is genuinely recreational and check commercial, AMSA and destination-jurisdiction requirements where relevant.

Before handover, match the HIN and registration details, verify cleared funds, complete any lender payout and discharge, and record the inventory and keys delivered.
