Selling a Boat in the ACT: Registration Explained

ACT boat-sale guide explaining interstate vessel registration, proof of sale, lake-use rules, PPSR and separate trailer transfer.

01

How the ACT process works

Access Canberra says the ACT has no boat registration or boat-licence scheme of its own. Power boats used on ACT lakes must generally be registered in another Australian state or territory unless exempt, so a seller must follow the registration transfer rules of the jurisdiction shown on the vessel's registration.

ACT has no boat-registration schemeThe ACT does not provide its own boat-registration transfer. Use the rules and timeframe of the vessel's registering state or territory and check ACT lake-use requirements separately.
02

Seller steps

Complete these steps before or at settlement and keep copies. If the vessel is registered elsewhere, use that jurisdiction's process.

  1. 01Identify the state or territory in which the vessel is currently registered.
  2. 02Follow that jurisdiction's seller transfer or notice-of-disposal steps, not an invented ACT transfer process.
  3. 03Provide a detailed contract, receipt, inventory and matching HIN evidence.
  4. 04Transfer the ACT or interstate trailer registration separately.
03

What the buyer needs to complete

A clear seller file helps the buyer meet the relevant deadline without returning for missing signatures or identifiers.

  1. 01Confirm which state or territory registration will apply to the vessel after purchase.
  2. 02Complete that jurisdiction's registration-transfer requirements and deadlines.
  3. 03Check Access Canberra or National Capital Authority approval and operating rules for the intended lake.
  4. 04Complete the trailer transfer under its registering jurisdiction.

Trailer, finance and settlement

The trailer remains a separately registered road vehicle. Its transfer follows the jurisdiction in which it is registered.

The ACT does not provide its own boat-registration transfer. Use the rules and timeframe of the vessel's registering state or territory and check ACT lake-use requirements separately.

Before handover, match the HIN and registration details, verify cleared funds, complete any lender payout and discharge, and record the inventory and keys delivered.
